Gallaudet University
Gallaudet University had its beginnings in 1856 when Amos Kendall established a school for the deaf and blind children (incorporated 1857 by Congress as Columbia Institution for the Instruction of the Deaf and Dumb and the Blind); Congress authorized the National Deaf Mute College in 1864; college renamed Gallaudet College, 1894; became Gallaudet University, Aug. 4, 1986
