"The Caspian Fisheries Research Institute (KaspNIRKh) is one of the oldest research institutions of Russia. The Institutes history began in 1897 when the first Russian fisheries research institution, the Ichthyological Laboratory was founded in Astrakhan. It was reorganized into the Astrakhan Fisheries Research Station in 1927 and into the Volga-Caspian Fisheries Research Station in 1930. In 1948, the Station became the Caspian Basin Branch of VNIRO (All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography) developed into a separate institute KaspNIRO in 1954 and renamed KaspNIRKh in 1965. In 1964, the Central Sturgeon Fisheries Research Institute (TsNIORKh) was separated from KaspNIRO. In 1989, KaspNIRKh and TsNIORKh merged."
