墨子刻（Thomas A. Metzger） 1933年生於德國柏林，哈佛大學博士。曾任加州大學聖地牙哥分校教授、美國史丹佛大學胡佛研究所資深研究員。現已退休，定居臺灣。墨子刻為知名漢學家，著有The Internal Organization of Ch'ing Bureaucracy: Legal, Normative, and Communication Aspects、Escape from Predicament: Neo-Confucianism and China’s Evolving Political Culture、A Cloud Across the Pacific: Essays on the Clash between Chinese and Western Political Theories Today、The Ivory Tower and the Marble Citadel: Essays on Political Philosophy in Our Modern Era of Interacting Cultures 等書，對於中國官僚體系、儒家思想與文化、烏托邦主義等議題有深刻的探索。 【編者簡介】 黃克武 1957年生於臺北，美國史丹佛大學歷史學博士，現任中央研究院近代史研究所特聘研究員，以及國立臺灣大學、臺灣師範大學歷史學系兼任教授。專長為中國近代思想史、文化史、知識分子研究。著有《一個被放棄的選擇：梁啟超調適思想之研究》、《自由的所以然：嚴復對約翰彌爾自由思想的認識與批判》、The Meaning of Freedom: Yan Fu and the Origins of Chinese Liberalism、《惟適之安：嚴復與近代中國的文化轉型》、《言不褻不笑：近代中國男性世界中的諧謔、情慾與身體》、《顧孟餘的清高：中國近代史的另一種可能》等專書，並且發表多篇學術論文
