'Kesik baş cinayeti is a detective novel claiming to be based on real incidents and narrated in the first person by an author who purports to be Ziya Bey, the police officer who is the central character of the novel; in the novel, Ziya Bey was nicknamed Nat Pinkerton after a character in popular German detective novels, many of which were translated into Ottoman Turkish; Ziya Bey's real identity is not certain, as many authors in the magazine in which he published his novel in serial form used pseudonyms' (LCAuth)
