Al-Khalili, Charlotte

Charlotte Al-Khalili is a social anthropologist trained in philosophy. She is a Leverhulme fellow in Sussex University and an associated member of CéSor (École des hautes études en sciences sociales/École pratique des hautes études. Her research explores the nexus between revolution and displacement, looking at the effects of the 2011 revolution and its aftermaths on displaced Syrians’ lifeworlds. Mapping out Syrians’ evolving understandings, imagination and conceptualisations of revolution and displacement, her PhD (UCL, 2019) analysed the emergence of alternative definitions of these phenomena. Her postdoctoral research has traced the religious genealogy of revolutionary groups from the 1980s and currently focuses on Syrian conceptions of predestination and martyrdom in the revolutionary and migratory contexts. She is the author of the forthcoming book Waiting for the Revolution to End: Syrian displacement, time and subjectivity (UCL, 2023).
