Calkins, O.S.M., 72, a member of the Servite Friars Order, and longtime missionary to South Africa, died Saturday in Chicago. Father Calkins entered the Servite Order at Mount St. Philip Seminary, Granville, Wis., in l941 and was ordained a priest on May 15, 1949, at Our Lady of the Forest Seminary in Lake Bluff. For a brief period, he served as an instructor at St. Philip High School in Chicago before being assigned to serve in the Servite Missions in Zululand, South Africa, in l950. Father Calkins served in South Africa until l985, when he returned to Chicago because of ill health. From 1985 to 1987, he served as associate pastor at Assumption Church in Chicago.
