Bier was professor emeritus in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Arizona. He was born in Vukovar, Croatia on December 7, 1920. During World War II, he spent four years as a refugee in Yugoslavia, Italy and Switzerland. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1945. He received a Ph.D. in chemistry from Fordham University. He moved to Tucson in 1962. He worked at the VA Hospital for 15 years, then as director of the UA Center for Separation Science
