Ex-bass player with the Street Sadists and was involved with the British punk rock scene of the 1970s. Since September 1997 Lecturer for sport social sciences at the University of Chichester. He has established an international research profile in the sociology of subcultures and the development of post-subcultural theory. Recent research interests include the social history of sport and leisure, with particular relevance to drinking studies and association football.
