Born in Baku, Azerbaijan in 1902, with family emigrated to the United States ; bachelor’s degree from Vassar College in 1925 ; studied at the School of Slavonic Studies of the Univ. of London ; In 1930 instructor in the English department (Smith College) ; Ph.D. from Bryn Mawr College in 1937 ; assistant professor in the English Department, 1943 associate professor at Smith College ; During WWII taught the history of Russian Literature at Yale Univ. ; until 1947 associate professor, then professor in Slavic Literature (Smith College) ; taught at Harvard University in 1948 ; 1963-1969 (Retirement) chair of Smith's Russian department (Helen and Laura Shedd Professor of Russian Literature) ; in 1965, visiting professor of Russian Literature at the University of Toronto ; died on June 29, 2000 at her home in Cummington, MA (https://findingaids.smith.edu/repositories/4/resources/1511)
