Liu, Jingping

Her primary research areas are rural politics, informal institutions, contentious politics and political economy in developing countries, particularly China. Her doctoral thesis is one of the few to systematically address the political role of Chinese village leaders in the reform era. Instead of following the conventional dichotomy between state agent and community representative, she conceptualizes a dual brokerage model, in which village leaders carefully balance the interests of state and community.
