Revd E. C. Rowlands, appointed to a lectureship in West African languages in 1946, had served for four years during the war as chaplain to Nigerian troops in Nigeria itself, in Sierra Leone, and later in Burma, during which time he had learnt Hausa – he preached in the language – and some Yoruba.43 For a decade before the war, he had been Lecturer in Classics and Theology at Lampeter.
