Berthrong, Merrill Gray

1919–2003

Dr. Merrill Gray Berthrong of 2032 Faculty Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27106 and 35 Corea Road Prospect Harbor, Maine, died at his home Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003. Dr. Berthrong was born July 18, 1919, in Somerville, Mass., the son of Louis P. Berthrong and Helen Clifton Gray Berthrong. He graduated from Tufts College, Medford, Mass., 1942, BA, Fletcher School of International Law and Diplomacy, 1947, MA and the University of Pennsylvania, 1958, with a Ph.D. in History. Dr. Berthrong was a professor at Connecticut University, 1948-1949, University of Pennsylvania, 1950-1954, Rutgers (State University of N.J.), 1958-1962. He served on the Librarian administration of the University of Pennsylvania Libraries, 1956-1964 and Director of Libraries and Associate Professor of History, Wake Forest University, 1964-1989.
