Richardson, Sam Scruton
1919–2004
He graduated from Trinity College, Oxford in 1940 with honours in politics, philosophy and economics. After World War II and service with the Royal Marine Commandos of the British Army in the Far East, he read Arabic and Hausa at the University of London and in 1945 joined the Sudan Political Service, with whom he stayed until 1959. n 1969 he was appointed the foundation principal of the Canberra College of Advanced Education, now the University of Canberra. During his 16 years there, he was closely involved in the management of universities in the South Pacific and Papua New Guinea and in the development of the International Institute of Administrative Sciences in Brussels.
