Varley was born near Castle Hill, Almondbury, ... he worked in Ghana (then the Gold Coast) from 1947 to 1956,[12] where he was professor of geography at the newly founded University College of the Gold Coast (now the University of Ghana), then based at Achimota.[13] He subsequently held a professorship at the University of Hull.[14]West Yorkshire.
