Vater, John J.

Mr John J. Vater is a Research Associate at the Institute of South Asian Studies (ISAS), Singapore. He graduated with a Bachelors of Arts in South Asian Studies and English-Modern Studies from the University of Virginia. He also holds a Masters in Fine Arts in Literary Translation from the University of Iowa, from which he received two scholarships to study Urdu and carry out research in New Delhi. John’s undergraduate and graduate theses were on India’s growing media industry, ideological changes in post-independence India, and contemporary identity politics. Prior to joining ISAS, John worked as a Fulbright-Nehru Student Researcher in India for two years. He has researched on Dalit (lower-caste) politics and literature; and India’s multilingual publishing
