Dun, Olivia

Dr. Olivia Dun works at the School of Geography, The University of Melbourne and at the School of Geography and Sustainable Communities at the University of Wollongong, Australia. She also is a human geographer with a background in environmental science, migration studies and international development currently working as an Postdoctoral Fellow in the School of Geography, University of Melbourne. She researches social aspects of environmental issues, particularly at the household scale. Her primary interests lie in the linkages between environmental change, natural hazards, and human migration/displacement as well as how social and cultural relationships with nature can shape and influence environmental protection and agriculture. She is currently conducting research about ethnically diverse perspectives on the Australian environment, focusing on rural Victoria. Between 2012 and early 2016 she worked in the School of Geography and Sustainable Communities at the University of Wollongong (UOW), where she is currently an Honorary Associate Fellow. There she worked on a range of research projects including 'PetaJakarta’ which is assessing the role of social media for civic co-management during monsoon flooding in Jakarta, Indonesia, ‘Mangrove Blue Carbon Futures’ which is exploring opportunities for carbon sequestration in mangrove ecosystems in Oceania, Asia and South America; and ‘Coexisting with fire: managing risk and amenity at the rural/urban interface’ which examined bushfire risk and amenity values of residents living in New South Wales. With a view to understanding how coastal populations are impacted by and respond to increasing saltwater intrusion, her PhD (awarded in 2014) focused on environmental/agricultural change and human migration in coastal areas of the Mekong Delta, Vietnam.
