Edison, Jerzy

1918–2003

Hometown Wierzbnik-Starachowice in central Poland, 19 when he escaped the Nazi by fleeing to the USSR; after the war he returned to Poland but antisemitism and communist repression impelled him to leave after a few years; made his way to Paris, staying from 1947 to 1957; wrote for Yiddish newspapers in Paris, London, and New York; moved to New York, settling in Brooklyn in 1957 and wrote for the Forverts; died 2003
