Hansen, Paul

Paul has a rather eclectic background. He started as an English and Philosophy major but completed a double BA in Political Science and Religious Studies. He then traveled and worked around South and South East Asia for several years. He completed an MA in Asian Religion and Thought. He then worked as a carpenter for a year and a cattle farmer for 2 years, before starting his doctoral research. In 2010 he was awarded a PhD in Social Anthropology from the University of London’s SOAS for his research on Hokkaido dairy farming. He continued this research on a post-doctoral fellowship at Hokkaido University. On a subsequent post-doctoral fellowship at The National Museum of Ethnology, Osaka, he focused on urban canine-human relationships. He has lectured in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Calgary, Canada and is currently an assistant professor in the Graduate School History and Anthropology at the University of Tsukuba, Japan. His research and publications focus on animal-human-technology relationships and the embodied, ethical, and affective permutations of such interrelations.
