Ṿaynerman, Khone

1902–1979

Born in the shtetl Luhin (Luhyny, Ukraine), Vaynerman joined in 1925, a farming colony in the South of Ukraine.The „new Jewish village“ became from then on one oft he main themes of his literary work. In 1932 he went to Odessa where he was editor of the newspaper "Odeser arbeter“. From 1937 to 1941 he worked as a correspondent for the newspaper "Der shtern“, from 1945 to 1948 for the newspaper "Eynikayt“. He started publishing his poems in 1925 and his first volume of poems appeared in Kharkov (Kharkiv) in 1930. In the following years a number of publications, poems, articles, reportages, appeared. Vaynerman was arrested in 1950 and condemned to 15 years of prison. After 6 years, he was freed and allowed to go back to Odessa where, severely traumatized, he spent his last years.
