Tsherniavski, Shloyme

1909–1974

Ukrainian Yiddish poet, born in the city of Kovel, he lost his family in a pogrom and grew up in an orphanage. Shloyme Tsherniavski began publishing his poetry in the 30s,while he was living in Kharkov. After a long period of time in which it was not allowed to publish in Yiddish, he resumed publications in 1961, in the first issue of Sovetish heymland. His book of poetry "Loyt moskver tsayt" was published in a Russian translation in 1975.
