Mine Workers' Union (Südafrika)

Transvaal Miners’ Union (TMA) was founded in all probability on 22 June 1902 in Johannesburg. At the end of 1913 the TMA was renamed the (South African) Mine Workers’ Union, or MWU. Beginning in 1998, efforts were made "to transform the MWU from a trade union into a labour movement and service provider"; as a result of the merger of five unions (the MWU, the South African Workers’ Union, or SAWU (which was a name change for the old Iron and Steel Union), the Transport Union, the Denel Union and the Forestry and Plantation Management Union), a new trade union entity, MWU-Solidarity, came about. In September 2002 MWU-Solidarity was renamed Solidarity.
