Worked for the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific Railroad as a laborer at the company's West Milwaukee, Wisconsin locomotive shop in 1974 and Burlington Northern Railroad as a train order operator in the Pacific Northwest and Chicago area from 1976 to 1983. Worked as a editor for Trains Magazine and Railroads Illustrated Magazine. Older brother of stand-up comedian and actor Mark C. Schneider.
