My main research concerns student academic work - particularly written and visual genres - from the perspective of their affordances and the learning opportunities they allow. I am also interested in 'street' communication such as graffiti, posters, shop signs, and how their design, location and moment in time affect their meanings and their readings. Another area concerns the movement of students between educational and linguistic borders and the ways in which they experience and adapt to these different contexts. I am also involved in forensic linguistics with particular reference to the performance of non-native speakers of English in police interviews.
