Kawanami, Hiroko

Senior Lecturer in the Department of Politics, Philosophy, and Religion at Lancaster University, UK. Her books include Renunciation and Empowerment of Buddhist Nuns in Myanmar-Burma (2013), Religions in the Modern World (co-edited, 2002; 2009), and A Special Issue on Burma-Myanmar Religions in Asian Ethnology (co-edited, 2009). Studied international relations and politics as an undergraduate student in Japan and then social anthropology as a postgraduate student in the UK. BA, MA (Tokyo), MSc (London), PhD (London). Taught at Sophia University, Tokyo.
