Bell, Christopher M.

Christopher M. Bell is a Professor of History at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He received an MA in War Studies from King’s College London in 1992, and a PhD in history from the University of Calgary in 1998. After spending a year and a half as a post-doctoral fellow at Simon Fraser University (1999-2001), he moved to the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island to take up a position as a research analyst. He returned to Canada in July 2003 to join the History department at Dalhousie University, where he teaches courses on a range of subjects, including modern Britain, the two world wars, and an upper-level seminar on Winston Churchill. He is the recipient of two teaching awards. Dr Bell has published numerous scholarly articles on naval history and British strategic foreign policy. His most recent book, Churchill and Sea Power, was published by Oxford University Press in late 2012. His previous books include The Royal Navy, Seapower and Strategy between the Wars (Stanford University Press, 2000) and (as co-editor with Bruce Elleman) Naval Mutinies of the Twentieth Century: An International Perspective (Frank Cass/Routledge, 2003). He is currently editing a new volume, with Professor John H. Maurer of the Naval War College, entitled At the Crossroads between Peace and War: Naval Rivalries and Arms Control between the World Wars: The London Conference of 1930, which will be published in 2013 by the Naval Institute Press. He is also hard at work on a new book about Winston Churchill and the Dardanelles Campaign. Dr Bell lives in Halifax with his wife, Rae, and their sons, Matthew and Alex.
