lecturer in Roman archaeology at Newcastle Univ.; he previously held a position at the McDonald Inst. for Archaeological Research in Cambridge and worked extensively in commercial archaeology; research interests: the end of Roman Britain and particularly the impact of the fall of the Western Roman Empire on the use and production of material culture; published widely on late Roman pottery, coins and hoarding
