Fromage, Pierre

1678–1740

He entered the Society of Jesus in Nancy, where he was educated on November 3, 1693, then taught the humanities at Reims, did his theology there, and was ordained a priest there in 1707. In 1710 he was assigned to the Jesuit mission of the Levant. He translated dozens of Western Catholic works (especially Jesuits) into Arabic and conceived plans to install a printing press with Arabic characters in the Levant (something that did not yet exist in the Ottoman Empire).
