Currently principal fellow with the Institute of Occidental Studies (IKON), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Shanta Nair-Venugopal was previously professor in language studies (sociolinguistics and intercultural communication) in the School of Language Studies and Linguistics (SoLLs), UKM. Currently engaged in interdisciplinary work, she taught, supervised and examined at the undergraduate and graduate levels in English language studies for more than thirty years
